AOP Health and VRG Therapeutics are partnering on a novel Kv1.3 potassium channel inhibitor for inflammation and immunology (I&I) indications.

AOP is a global pharmaceutical enterprise group that focuses on integrated therapies for rare diseases and critical care. VRG, meanwhile, is a Budapest-based AI-driven developer of miniproteins.

Addressing Inflammation and Immunology Needs

It is the field of miniproteins on which this strategic partnership will center. VRG’s AI-MPRO program—combining AI-driven protein design with experimental validation—discovered a next-generation miniprotein candidate.

The focus is now on generating additional, preclinical proof-of-concept data to progress toward first-in-human studies.

As for Kv1.3, a clinically validated target, it plays a critical role in regulating pathogenic immune cells. This applies to chronic inflammatory or autoimmune disorders. Selectively inhibiting Kv1.3 can modulate immune responses driving disease, while minimizing side effects.

Previous limitations to advancements that targeted Kv1.3 might be overcome, however. This is due to the “exceptional” selectivity and precision of the miniprotein modality.

What AOP and VRG Get From the Deal

Through this collaboration, AOP is expanding its external R&D into complex and scientifically active areas. Concurrently, VRG has an opportunity to validate the AI-MPRO platform, advancing its technology toward clinical application.

“[The] platform has demonstrated the ability to generate highly selective candidates against complex biological targets,” said AOP CEO Martin Steinhart. “We see strong potential in targeting Kv1.3 for autoimmune and inflammatory diseases and look forward to advancing this program.”

“AOP Health is an ideal partner for this program,” Zalán Péterfi, VRG Chairman of the Board and Managing Director, said. “Advancing together the Kv1.3 program, we intend to expand our partnership to fully exploit the platform potential.”
