Operations at the Franklin site will be phased out by the end of 2026.

Thermo Fisher Scientific said it will close a manufacturing facility in Franklin, Massachusetts, and eliminate up to 80 positions as it continues to pare its manufacturing footprint. Layoffs tied to the closure will occur between Dec. 31, 2026, and Dec. 31, 2027, according to an updated state Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notice.
The Franklin site employs about 200 workers, 120 of which are expected to relocate to other Thermo Fisher facilities in Massachusetts. The site is one of two in the area and produces environmental and process monitoring equipment.
Thermo Fisher said the decision reflects current customer demand and an ongoing review of global operations aimed at improving efficiency. Operations at the Franklin site will be phased out by the end of 2026, with much of the work shifting to other U.S. manufacturing locations. The company said affected employees will receive job-transition support and that the move does not signal a broader pullback from U.S. manufacturing.
The closure follows a series of recent workforce reductions. Last year, Thermo Fisher cut about 300 jobs at viral vector manufacturing sites in Cambridge and Plainville, Mass., and announced the closure of a viral vector facility in Lexington, Mass., affecting 160 positions. More recently, the company said it will shut a lab equipment manufacturing plant in Asheville, N.C., eliminating 421 jobs by the end of 2027.
Even as it trims some sites, Thermo Fisher has expanded elsewhere. In 2025, the company acquired a sterile fill-finish and packaging facility from Sanofi in Ridgefield, N.J., taking on about 200 employees as part of a pledge to invest an additional $2 billion in U.S. operations over four years.
